Stainless steel is common in Europe and North America, especially for indoor or covered public spaces. It looks clean and is durable in controlled environments. But it's expensive, and cheaper versions can corrode easily in coastal areas.
Galvanized steel is the go-to material for most municipal projects. Once galvanized, it handles rain, snow, and typical coastal conditions pretty well. It's widely used in Spain, Mexico, and parts of the U.S. It's cheaper than stainless steel and pretty durable too.
In places with high humidity, salty air, or a tight budget, HDPE plastic dominates. Coastal areas in Africa and South America usually choose it over steel. If treated for UV resistance, it won't rust, dent, or fade. It's lightweight, easier to handle, and cheaper to transport. The downside is that it doesn't have the premium feel of metal, and some buyers worry about durability, even though modern HDPE can last well over 10 years.
The right choice depends on the site conditions, budget, and expected lifespan. A coastal resort in Kenya? HDPE. A city square in Germany? Galvanized or stainless steel.
